The Benefits of Whole Body Vibration (WBV) Turn Back Time

Research shows that Whole Body Vibration (WBV) provides many longevity benefits that help you “turn back time” in your overall health and well-being. These benefits include improved balance, increased bone mass, reduced back pain, and improved muscle strength and flexibility.

WBV Improves Balance

Japanese researchers at the Kawashima Orthopedic Clinic studied the effects of WBV on balance with a group of people ages 59-86. Results showed a dramatic improvement in overall fitness, balance, and walking endurance in the group who used WBV for as little as 4 minutes, once a week, for 2 months. The reseachers also found that WBV was safe and well tolerated by the elderly.

WBV Increases Bone Mass

Spanish sports medicine researchers studied the benefits of WBV and its ability to prevent bone fractures and osteoprosis on post-menopausal women. They studied 2 groups of women – one group used WBV for 6-12 minutes, three times a week; the second group walked for 55 minutes, and stretched for 5 minutes, three times a week. After 8 months, the WBV group had increased their bone mass by an average of 4% (as tested in the femoral neck), and improved their balance by 29%. The walking group showed no improvement in bone density or balance.

 WBV Reduces Back Pain

Researchers in Belgium looked at how WBV could benefit those who suffer from chronic low back pain. They studied 23 young patients, comparing them to 21 healthy pain-free control subjects, and found that WBV improved lower back muscle control, and reduced pain.

 WBV Improves Muscle Strength and Flexibility

Italian sports medicine researchers studied the short-term effects (8 weeks) of WBV on young female athletes, with a focus on muscle performance and flexibility, especially as they affect injury prevention. After 8 weeks, the WBV group showed improved knee extension strength, improved counter-movement jump, and improved flexibility. The improved flexibility was noted as important for both athletic performance as well as preventing muscle-tendon injuries.
