Ghrelin is a hormone commonly referred to as the only hormone capable of stimulating appetite. It’s responsible for stress eating and long-term weight gain. When you crave salty, sweet or fat foods, it’s in response to Ghrelin.

Ghrelin gets released in direct response to stressful events, which contributes to so many peoples struggle with stress eating. Worse, it perpetuates this stress-cycle contributing to further weight gain.

Leptin is a hormone commonly referred to as the “starvation hormone” as it gives you a sense of feeling “full”. Leptin lets your brain know you’ve had enough to eat, and keeps your body running on the right amount of energy. Typically, your fat cells create the right amount of leptin to give you energy and maintain a healthy weight. Things can get out of balance though when you over-eat and ignore the “full” signals your body gives you. When you do this, you risk developing “leptin-resistance”, which causes further weight gain and obesity.
