More energy, a sense of calmness and clear skin are just some of the benefits that come along with post-workout glow. But did you know a decrease in appetite is another benefit to the post-workout glow from a HIIT workout?
Studies suggest that high-intensity interval training (HIIT) reduces your appetite. Researchers at the University of Western Australia conducted a study which concluded that when a group of overweight men chose a 30-minute high-intensity interval training compared to a moderate intensity training of the same length, they consumed fewer calories after. This wasn’t due to them boasting willpower and discipline when it came to their food choices post-work-out. The HIIT training simply caused them to be less hungry.
HIIT balances your hormones for long-term weight loss and maintenance.
What you need to know about Ghrelin and Leptin:
Ghrelin is a hormone commonly referred to as the only hormone capable of stimulating appetite. It’s responsible for stress eating and long-term weight gain. When you crave salty, sweet or fat foods, it’s in response to Ghrelin.
Ghrelin gets released in direct response to stressful events, which contributes to so many peoples struggle with stress eating. Worse, it perpetuates this stress-cycle contributing to further weight gain.
Leptin is a hormone commonly referred to as the “starvation hormone” as it gives you a sense of feeling “full”. Leptin lets your brain know you’ve had enough to eat, and keeps your body running on the right amount of energy. Typically, your fat cells create the right amount of leptin to give you energy and maintain a healthy weight. Things can get out of balance though when you over-eat and ignore the “full” signals your body gives you. When you do this, you risk developing “leptin-resistance”, which causes further weight gain and obesity.
High-intensity interval training can control both hormones (and balances other hormones) naturally! HIIT is one of the most effective and efficient workouts to manage unhealthy over-eating behaviors and to maximize your levels of ghrelin and leptin to lose weight.
