Canada’s National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women

December 6 is Canada’s National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. This day has been established to honor the tragic and violent deaths of 14 young women and the injury of another 10 women who were studying at l’École Polytechnique de Montréal, by an armed male student in 1989. This male student deliberately targeted these young women in an effort to fight feminism.

“Twenty-seven years ago today, 14 young women were murdered at l’École Polytechnique de Montréal simply because they were women,” said Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at a public ceremony to mark the day in 2016. “On this somber anniversary, let us reflect on what Canadians – women, men, and youth – can do to rid the country and the planet of the scourges of misogyny and gender-based violence. The statistics on violence against girls and women are unacceptable. Far too many girls and women, here in Canada and around the world, suffer physical and psychological harm at the hands of others – often people they love and trust.”

Trudeau continued, “On this day – and every day – we recommit ourselves to finding solutions that help prevent future acts of violence. Men and boys are a vital part of the solution to change attitudes and behaviours that allow for this violence to exist. There must be zero tolerance for violence against women, and only with everyone’s support can we build a Canada that is safe for all.”

According to the Canada’s YWCA, “Violence against women is the world’s largest and most persistent human rights violation, and Canada is no exception. Over 50% of Canadian women will experience an incident of violence at some point in their lives, the majority before they turn 25. In most cases, women know their abuser. Violence against women costs over $4 billion per year including direct medical costs along with those of criminal justice, social services, and lost productivity.”

This cause is especially meaningful to Pure Vibe Owner, Dominica Bay, as she experienced a violent rape at age 14 and this early experience contributed to her goal of becoming a strong, resilient woman empowering others to be physically and mentally strong so they are better equipped to take care of themselves and their families.

The Vibers that I connect with know I am an extremely private person and accept me as an extremely passionate trainer wanting to always stay focused on the mission: helping you reach your health and fitness goals and maximizing your time. In order to deliver results in just 20 minutes it’s paramount we provide a safe, calm, quiet environment free from any negativity and distractions so every viber can thrive. The other factor I am really sensitive too is protecting my team and fellow Vibers from bullies, gossip and invasion of personal space. To the extravert that loves to be the center of attention and put themselves ahead of others they see this as a threat but to the fellow introverts that I am desperately trying to protect and make them feel welcome so every viber is treated equally they feel a sense of relief that they are not overshadowed.

If you’ve never experienced violence or sexual assault you’ll never understand why we are often so serious as life to us is not a joke and we often take a lot of pride in our work which gives our life meaning.

The way you view the world will forever change as it is always with you; every step, every move, every decision however in time with daily focus, commitment and determination you can learn to use your strong mind to earn your strong body and transform yourself from a victim to survivor and use your fire to fuel your passion to give back to others setting a strong example as you live your purpose.

My medicine is peaceful silent reflection during my cathartic daily workout as it gave me the strength to forgive my attacker so I could move forward and build inner confidence to believe in myself so that one day I may truly smile again.

That in a nutshell is my mission to give every viber when they walk through the door. No matter what is going on in your life your special gift of true connection awaits you and will give you the power to tackle anything that comes your way so you can walk out the door lighter with a happy heart and newfound confidence of ambition and clarity.

If I gave just one Vibe Star hope that she can heal herself and inspire just one Vibe Critic to start taking her health and training more seriously then this is well worth the discomfort.”
