A Grateful Heart is a Happy Heart

Dominica’s recommended “attitude of gratitude” has been scientifically shown to provide multiple health and wellness benefits. From better sleep, exercise and relationships to enhancing empathy, self-esteem, and mental well-being, gratitude is something we can all choose to express in our daily lives.

“In fact, gratitude may be one of the most overlooked tools that we all have access to every day,” according to psychotherapist and author, Amy Morin. “Cultivating gratitude doesn’t cost any money and it certainly doesn’t take much time, but the benefits are enormous.”

Wondering how to incorporate more gratitude into your life? Start a gratitude journal. Before bedtime each night, spend 15 minutes writing down aspects of your life that you’re grateful for. These don’t have to be “big ticket” items, but can be the small kindnesses you’ve received during the day, all the way up to your workout, health, fresh air, clean water, love and the freedoms you enjoy living in Canada. A 2011 study published in Applied Psychology: Health and Well-Being showed that this daily practice improved the duration and quality of the participants’ exercise and sleep.
