The holiday season has arrived! At Pure Vibe we wish you the happiest and merriest holidays, and have some tips to share so you can not only survive but also thrive this season!
Is there anything better than a crisp sheet of paper and pen at the ready for list making? Whether you’re old school with a pen, or a spreadsheet modernista, planning is half the battle for a happy holiday. Make sure yours includes the “must-do’s,” as well as your family’s favourites, and some downtime. Set time and money budgets, and remember you’re not obligated to do everything.
The first step in putting your plan into action is taking the time to get organized. Take inventory of what you already have, especially in the categories of food, gifts, clothing, decorations, wrap, etc. You’ll save time and money in the long run. Organize your schedules to include healthy meals and avoid the stress of last minute shopping and double-bookings.
“Tis better to give than receive” according to the old adage. Playing Santa is lots of fun, so go for it! But remember that gifts of time and kindness are just as important as anything from a store. Most memories come from thoughtful kindness and the spirit of giving, more than gift cards and gift receipts.
The flip side of giving is taking—so learn to receive gracefully. When you receive with grace, you’re allowing others the pleasure of giving. Plus, this is a great strategy for entertaining. When guests offer to bring an appetizer, salad, or dessert, learn to say, “thank you!” They’ll have the pleasure of giving, you’ll have the pleasure of receiving, and you’ll all enjoy the camaraderie of the season!
“Happiness is only real when shared”. This is also true when sharing holiday tasks! Share with your friends, family, and neighbors—offer to carpool the kids, trade babysitting nights, make a double-batch dinner and give one away. If you enjoy entertaining, try to include those without friends or family nearby. Open your hearts to coworkers and neighbors who may enjoy sharing a piece of the holiday with you—host a tree-trimming evening, bake apples for coworkers, treat a neighbor for a VIBE!
When most of us think of happy holiday memories, our thoughts go back to simple pleasures during childhood. Visits with cousins, grandparents, family traditions, stories, songs, special foods, laughter, and connection. These are the true gems. Experiences with people over products.
“Treat,” is one of those words that create excitement! Whatever that means to you and your family, treat yourselves! Give yourselves the gift of time and connection, or even a little indulgence! Add a good dose of mindfulness and gratitude to fully enjoy the many treats of the season.
Don’t forget self-care. And if things become overwhelming, breathe. And breathe again. Close your eyes, and take a deep breath in through your nose, and out through your mouth. And repeat. Deep, slow breaths signal your brain to relax. Aim for a steady count of six or eight when breathing in and out.
Winter is nature’s season of rest and renewal, and we’re a part of that natural rhythm. Balance the celebrations and extra activities with quality sleep. “Sleep is the best meditation”, according to His Holiness, the Dalai Lama. The Pure Vibe Lifestyle includes eight hours or more of quality sleep per night.
Much holiday attention is given to celebratory foods and feasting. This is part of our human history, so don’t fight it but be strategic. You can enjoy your favorite that’s offered in moderation. Balance those rich choices with nature’s bounty of fresh vegetables, fruits, nuts, broths and juices.
Stay hydrated! Especially when the weather gets cold and dry, and when you’re extra busy with holiday errands and activities. Drink filtered or spring water throughout the day as part of the Pure Vibe Lifestyle. Opt for real fruit spritzers or a hot cup of herbal tea with friends, and a rich vegan hot chocolate with the kids.
- Be merry!
Enjoy! Fill your heart with delight, and savor every delicious moment of laughter and connection. It’s the holidays, and you deserve it! We wish you the merriest season of celebration!
